A significant accusation has been leveled against the Jharkhand Police by Babulal Marandi, the state BJP president and Leader of the Opposition. Marandi has publicly stated that the police force is operating in a manner that disregards established laws and regulations. He cited a specific incident in Ranchi where an investigation review concerning a criminal case linked to the Gonda and Namkum police stations was assigned to the DIG overseeing the budget. Marandi expressed bewilderment, questioning the necessity of delegating such a task to a financial official when numerous high-ranking police officers, including the SSP, DIG, and IG, are posted in the capital. He interprets this as a stark indicator of the police force’s ineffectiveness and a gross violation of procedural guidelines.
Furthermore, Marandi criticized the administration for allegedly misusing personnel. He pointed out the government’s reported practice of assigning female constables of IRB/JAP battalions to perform clerical duties in police stations, a role outside their intended training. This action, he claimed, has resulted in a significant depletion of armed personnel for critical duties. He contrasted this with the current situation where a sensitive case review was entrusted to the budget department. Marandi demanded accountability, suggesting that incompetent senior officials in Ranchi should be removed. He also raised a hypothetical but pointed concern about whether JAP personnel might eventually be deployed for accounting tasks, thereby undermining their roles in crime control and law enforcement, and potentially impacting their availability for national security needs. This scenario, he warned, reflects a troubling disregard for rules and regulations, akin to what he described as a retired IPS officer allegedly occupying the DGP post in contravention of service conduct rules.
