The second National Space Day was observed in India with celebrations centered around the momentous lunar landing of Chandrayaan-3’s Vikram Lander on August 23, 2023. This achievement placed India as the fourth nation to land on the moon and the first to reach its South Pole. The Pragyan Rover conducted scientific studies on the lunar surface following the landing, and the designated landing site was named “Shiva Shakti Point,” representing India’s scientific and cultural identity. The Indian government declared August 23 as “National Space Day” to celebrate this milestone, showcasing the country’s growing space capabilities. The theme for this year’s event, “Aryabhatta to Gaganyaan: From Ancient Knowledge to Limitless Possibilities,” reflects India’s trajectory from its astronomical roots to modern space exploration. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, Science and Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, and ISRO Chairman V Narayanan were among the attendees at the 2nd National Space Day program at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The event celebrated the two-year anniversary of India’s successful lunar landing, underscoring its prominent role in global space research. ISRO chief V. Narayanan discussed the achievement of sending a ‘Gaganyatri’ to the International Space Station, crediting the Prime Minister’s foresight for the initiative.
