Marking a significant stride in naval modernization, INS Ikshak, the third of the Survey Vessel Large (SVL) class, has been formally commissioned into the Indian Navy. The ceremonial induction took place at the Naval Base in Kochi, highlighting the nation’s growing prowess in maritime survey technology. INS Ikshak is engineered to undertake critical missions, including charting deep oceans and previously unmapped waters, thereby ensuring maritime safety and facilitating navigation for seafarers. A key aspect of its design is the extensive use of indigenous technology, with approximately 80% of its cost attributed to Indian-made components and entirely Indian steel. This achievement aligns with the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, showcasing robust domestic industrial capabilities. The vessel is equipped with advanced hydrographic and oceanographic survey systems, alongside helicopter facilities, providing exceptional operational versatility. Its multi-role capability extends to humanitarian assistance, disaster relief operations, and potential use as a hospital ship. In a pioneering move, INS Ikshak features dedicated accommodations for women, advancing gender inclusivity within the Navy. The commissioning of this vessel strengthens India’s maritime intelligence, national security, and strategic maritime influence.
