Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil has addressed remarks made by former Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, reiterating India’s strong stance on the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). Patil made it clear that India’s decisions on this matter are made with the nation’s interests in mind.
Patil, when asked about the current status of the treaty, said that there was no update on the abeyance of the treaty. He emphasized that the Indian government, under the leadership of the Prime Minister, would make decisions that would solely benefit the nation. This response came in the wake of Bhutto’s comments about the treaty.
The recent developments follow India’s decision to suspend its participation in the IWT, a treaty governing water sharing with Pakistan. This decision is part of India’s efforts to address Pakistan’s alleged support for terrorism.
