A significant development in the Indian political landscape sees 145 Members of Parliament joining to submit an impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma. This motion, which was presented to the Lok Sabha Speaker, is built on Articles 124, 217, and 218 of the Constitution. The signatories include a wide range of MPs from different parties, such as the Congress, JDU, and others. Notable figures who signed the motion include Rahul Gandhi, Anurag Singh Thakur, and others.
Moreover, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has confirmed the receipt of a separate motion, signed by 50 MPs, also concerning the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Varma. This motion follows an internal inquiry related to an incident at the judge’s residence where semi-burnt cash was found after a fire. Dhankhar has confirmed that this motion also fulfills the required numerical threshold. He inquired with Law Minister Arjum Ram Meghwal regarding a similar motion in the Lok Sabha. Justice Varma has moved the Supreme Court to challenge the findings of the inquiry committee, citing lack of fair opportunity. The incident and subsequent actions have unfolded just before the Parliament’s monsoon session.
