Chennai and surrounding districts are under an orange alert today, November 17, 2025, following intense overnight rainfall and subsequent waterlogging. The IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy showers, prompting an immediate closure of schools in Chennai, Chengalpattu, and Tiruvallur. Kancheepuram schools are also expected to remain shut. This alert stems from a low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal. The meteorological department has designated Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and Karaikal for the orange alert, signifying a high risk of severe weather. Several other coastal and southern districts are on yellow alert. Chennai’s forecast is for a cloudy day with significant rain and temperatures near 29-30°C. Across India, states like Delhi NCR and Uttar Pradesh are experiencing normal weather patterns without any rain-related school holidays.
