Former Indian cricketer and Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh is actively involved in providing relief to flood-affected regions of Punjab. He has initiated a multi-pronged approach, including the provision of boats and ambulances, alongside fundraising efforts facilitated by his personal and professional connections. Singh utilized his MPLAD funds to procure eight steamer boats intended for supporting rescue and relief operations currently underway. In addition to this, he personally contributed to the purchase of three more boats. Punjab has been enduring severe flooding over the past few weeks, attributed to consistent monsoon rainfall and the breaching of riverbanks, resulting in extensive damage and the displacement of numerous residents. Government agencies and volunteers are actively involved in relief operations, as some areas remain submerged. Singh’s endeavors include the donation of a total of eleven steamer boats. Eight boats were purchased using his MPLAD fund, with the remaining three funded from his personal resources. The cost of each boat was between Rs 4.5 to Rs 5.5 lakh. He has also acquired three ambulances to ensure the prompt and effective transfer of seriously ill patients to neighboring hospitals. Besides government support, Harbhajan reached out to his network to garner further assistance. A sports body extended a contribution of INR 30 lakh, while two of his personal contacts provided INR 12 lakh and INR 6 lakh, respectively. Approximately Rs 50 lakh has been collected and donated. As a representative in the Rajya Sabha, Harbhajan is actively monitoring the developments and has pledged to offer unwavering support towards recovery and rehabilitation in the afflicted areas.
