Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar is slated to take on the leadership mantle as President of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) starting December 3, 2025. The ceremony will take place in Stockholm, Sweden. This significant appointment serves as a powerful international endorsement of the Election Commission of India’s capabilities and its consistent track record of delivering unbiased, transparent, and trustworthy elections. Kumar conveyed his deep sense of pride, stating that the international community acknowledges India’s proficiency in executing free, fair, and transparent elections. He elaborated that it is a historic occasion, as for the first time in 30 years, the 37 member democratic nations have invited India to chair International IDEA. He described this as a moment of immense national pride for all Indian citizens and the dedicated staff of the Election Commission. International IDEA, founded in 1995, operates as an inter-governmental organization committed to strengthening democratic principles worldwide. It has 35 member states, with the U.S. and Japan serving as observers. India, a foundational member of this organization, plays an active role in its governance, collaborative research, and training programs. As the world’s largest democracy, India brings an unparalleled depth of electoral knowledge and is expected to champion the sharing of best practices and technological advancements with Election Management Bodies globally during its 2026 presidency.
