The rebel faction of the Shiromani Akali Dal has declared Giani Harpreet Singh, the former Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, as their president. This group is preparing to approach the Election Commission to claim the party’s leadership.
The split occurred following the declaration of Sukhbir Badal as a ‘tankhaiya’ by Sri Akal Takht Sahib. A five-member committee was formed by the Akal Takht to conduct a new membership drive and determine the next president. Despite this, the Shiromani Akali Dal sidelined the committee, initiated its own membership drive, and announced Sukhbir Badal as the party president.
