The GMDA is planning to construct an elevated corridor on the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) that will mirror the Dwarka Expressway. This initiative is designed to simplify travel between Delhi and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway by avoiding traffic signals and city congestion. Officials confirmed that a consultant was engaged this year to develop a detailed project report focused on the SPR’s renovation from Vatika Chowk to NH-8, a 5.5-km segment. The design has been submitted.
The proposed elevated corridor will feature six lanes and access ramps. It will connect the Dwarka Expressway and NH-8 via the existing cloverleaf intersection, as well as linking to the Sohna Highway (NH-248A) at Vatika Chowk, ensuring smooth traffic flow. Commuters will be able to travel seamlessly from Shiv Murti in Delhi to NH-8 and NH-248A, and those heading towards Delhi from the Sohna Highway will also experience improved connectivity. The project, initiated in 2019, faced delays.
In 2022, a plan to build flyovers and widen the SPR was put on hold. Afterward, the then-Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar directed the GMDA to build an elevated road directly linking NH-248A to NH-8 and Dwarka Expressway. Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini approved the project in July 2024. The GMDA board has approved Rs 750 crore for the project, with construction and land acquisition costs factored in. The redevelopment of the SPR is considered crucial by local residents.
