Delhi is taking decisive steps to address stray dog management and rabies control. Following a recent Supreme Court ruling, the city’s animal welfare board met on Wednesday to formulate a comprehensive strategy. The key initiatives include microchipping one million stray dogs, regulating pet shop operations, and launching a Rabies Action Plan. The Rabies Action Plan will incorporate digitized vaccination records, district-level monitoring committees, and targeted efforts to prevent dog bite incidents. All pet shops in Delhi will be required to register with a monitoring committee, ensuring compliance with regulations. The meeting also addressed funding and governance aspects, including the transfer of resources and the formation of committees. A multi-pronged awareness campaign is planned, with school-level initiatives led by the Education department and market monitoring by a dedicated committee. Officials have been directed to prepare a detailed advisory covering rabies control, microchipping, pet shop registration, and public awareness, with a strong emphasis on utilizing social media platforms.
