A conditional reprieve on firecracker use has been granted to Delhi-NCR residents by the Supreme Court, just in time for Diwali. The court has sanctioned the sale and use of ‘green crackers’—certified for environmental compliance—between October 18th and 21st. This decision responds to the Delhi government’s plea for allowing eco-friendly alternatives amid the festival. To minimize pollution, the Supreme Court has set strict time limits for bursting: 6 AM to 7 AM and 8 PM to 10 PM on Diwali. The ruling emphasizes a balanced approach, allowing moderate celebrations while safeguarding the environment. Key conditions include using only NEERI/PESO-certified products, prohibiting imports from outside the NCR, and rigorous monitoring by pollution control boards. Police patrols will ensure only permitted items with QR codes are sold, and licenses face suspension for violations. The long-term policy will be decided after a three-week trial assessment.
