Varanasi’s ropeway project is progressing, with trial runs currently taking place. The aim is for the project to begin operations by December. Despite some setbacks, the administration is now focused on achieving this goal. This development will make Varanasi the first Indian city to have a ropeway transportation network.
The trial phase commenced in July, dedicated to assessing the operational capabilities of the ropeway. The goal is to optimize service delivery by identifying and resolving any problems. The initial deadline of September 30 was not met, leading to a revised target of December. The ropeway will run from Cantt to Godowlia and will include five stations: Varanasi Cantonment, Kashi Vidyapeeth, Rath Yatra, Girja Ghar, and Godowlia.
The ropeway service is projected to significantly cut down travel time, completing the journey in approximately 15 minutes, a considerable improvement from the 45-50 minutes needed by road. The project’s completion is being expedited to ensure the December launch. The project was inaugurated in March 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
