A case of online fraud has surfaced in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, where a woman was defrauded of ₹18 lakh. The deceit involved a man pretending to be a doctor from the UK to lure the victim into a marriage scam. The woman reported the incident to the authorities after realizing she had been a victim of fraud.
The incident was reported to the Khamhardih police station. The complainant, a 38-year-old woman from Bhawna Nagar, Khamhardih, explained in her complaint that she had created a profile on a matrimonial website. She was contacted by Dr. Shiva Kumar, also known as Surendra, on May 19, 2025. Shiva claimed to be a UK resident and proposed marriage, initiating regular communication.
Subsequently, the accused mentioned his plan to visit Raipur and later, on May 22, contacted her from Delhi airport, alleging he was detained by customs officials. He then requested ₹18 lakh for his release. The woman, believing his claims, transferred the money to different accounts.
After receiving the funds, the accused deactivated his phone. The woman’s attempts to contact him were unsuccessful. Feeling cheated, she lodged a complaint with the police. The Khamhardih police station has registered a case under BNS 318-4 and is actively searching for the accused to bring him to justice.
