Chhattisgarh is implementing a fishing ban from June 16, 2025, to August 15, 2025, to protect fish populations during their breeding season. This regulation applies to all rivers, ponds, and reservoirs within the state, and it prohibits the catching, killing, and sale of fish during this period.
The objective of this ban is to offer protection to fish while they are spawning in the monsoon season. This action is taken under the Chhattisgarh Fisheries Act of 1972, and its goal is to provide a secure environment for fish reproduction. The initiative is expected to lead to an increase in the fish population and benefit the farming community.
Water bodies that are not linked to rivers or streams, and also cage culture operations, are exempt from this restriction.
Individuals who violate this fishing ban may face a sentence of up to one year in jail, a fine of ₹10,000, or both.
Moreover, Chhattisgarh has prohibited the cultivation, sale, purchase, and import of the African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) and the bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis). These non-native species harm the native aquatic ecosystem and the government has classified them as restricted species. Penalties for violations include imprisonment for a year and/or a fine of ₹10,000, irrespective of the ownership of the water body.
