Beginning in September, electricity consumers in Chhattisgarh will see their bills increase due to the end of a government subsidy. For over six years, residential consumers benefited from a 50% discount on electricity bills for consumption up to 400 units. This discount significantly reduced their monthly expenses. The government has removed this subsidy starting on August 1st. The effects will be noticed in the electricity bills issued in September. Consumers can expect to pay between 558 and 1223 rupees more on their bills. From March 1, 2019, the government provided a 50% discount on the first 400 units of electricity used each month by domestic consumers. This discount was available to all domestic users, no matter how much electricity they consumed. Even those who used more than 400 units still received the discount on the first 400 units. Any usage above that amount was charged at the standard rate. The end of this subsidy will translate to higher electricity costs for households.
