A dramatic case in Dhamtari, Chhattisgarh, saw a man’s disappearance near the Gangrel Dam trigger a frantic search that spanned 12 days, only to conclude with an unexpected discovery: the man was alive and hiding in Delhi. The man, identified as Hemant Chandravanshi, allegedly faked his death due to mounting debts.
The sequence of events began on May 24 when Chandravanshi, a resident of Kawardha, arrived in Dhamtari with his companions and stayed at a resort near the Gangrel Dam. The following day, while preparing to swim, he sent his friends to buy supplies. When they returned, Chandravanshi was gone, with only his belongings remaining at the dam’s edge.
Alarmed, his friends alerted the Rudri police. The police initiated a comprehensive search, deploying divers to search the water, initially operating under the assumption that Chandravanshi had drowned. However, as days turned into weeks without any sign of him, suspicions arose.
The police, suspecting a deception, questioned Chandravanshi’s family, leading them to a second mobile number. Utilizing this number, they tracked his location to Delhi, where he was eventually found and brought back to Dhamtari.
ASP Manishankar Chandra confirmed that Chandravanshi’s actions were driven by substantial debt. He staged his own demise, leaving his belongings near the dam before fleeing. The police are preparing to take legal action due to the severity of his actions.
