A wave of surrenders in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh, saw 37 Naxal operatives rejoin mainstream society on Sunday. The group’s significance is amplified by the fact that 27 of the individuals were high-value targets, collectively carrying bounties totaling Rs 65 lakh. This mass surrender was facilitated by the ‘Poona Margem’ initiative, which champions rehabilitation and provides a pathway back to civilian life.
Officials confirmed that the surrender took place in the presence of senior police and CRPF officers. The diverse group included 12 women, showcasing the extensive reach of the rehabilitation program. Among the surrendered operatives were Kumali alias Anita Mandavi, Geeta alias Laxmi Madkam, Ranjan alias Soma Mandavi, and Bhima alias Jahaj Kalmu. Each of these individuals was associated with an Rs 8 lakh reward.
To ensure a successful reintegration, the state government offers a comprehensive support package. Upon surrender, individuals receive Rs 50,000, followed by access to skill development programs and assistance with agricultural land. This approach aims to provide sustainable livelihoods and encourage a peaceful transition.
The ‘Poona Margem’ initiative is recognized as a cornerstone of the Bastar Range Police’s strategy for lasting peace and development. In the preceding 20 months, the region has witnessed the surrender of over 500 Maoists, including 165 bounty holders. These ongoing efforts are crucial as the nation strives to end Naxalism by its target date of March 2026, with Chhattisgarh alone recording over 2,200 surrenders in the last 23 months.
