The Chhattisgarh government, guided by Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai’s Good Governance principles, has initiated a comprehensive restructuring of the Commercial Tax (GST) Department. This move signifies a commitment to enhancing transparency, fairness, and public service within the department. After a long period, the department has seen significant transfers, unlike the limited shuffling in the past few years. Several officers and staff had been stationed at the same locations for extended periods, with some reaching 18 years of service in one place. This prolonged tenure was believed to affect the impartiality of tax collection. The recent transfers involved a large number of officials, including State Tax Deputy Commissioners and Inspectors. The transfers include promotions and new postings. Furthermore, many had been stationed in their home districts for years. The government has also addressed previous shortcomings in district representation. The department is expanding its reach by establishing circles in previously unserved districts, ensuring all areas benefit from government services. To enhance revenue collection, BIU and audit units have been formed, with officers deployed to these units. While implementing the transfers, the government has been considerate of the human factor. The administration has aimed to accommodate couples in the same district and assign female officers to nearby locations whenever possible. The Finance Minister stated that the government will continue its efforts to instill an honest, transparent, and devoted work culture.
