Bilha Nagar Panchayat in Chhattisgarh has earned the top spot in the Swachhata Survekshan 2024-25 in the category of towns with populations under 20,000. This outstanding achievement was acknowledged at a prestigious award ceremony held in New Delhi on July 17, 2025, where President Droupadi Murmu presented the award. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also commended Bilha’s initiatives during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ broadcast.
Approximately 15,000 residents of Bilha benefit from the efforts of 28 sanitation workers who collect waste using e-rickshaws and manage waste segregation at an SLRM center. Wet waste is used to produce compost, and the sale of dry waste supports the financial independence of the women involved. Furthermore, ten sanitation commandos contribute to maintaining cleanliness. The award was a result of evaluations by the Ministry of Urban Development that encompassed waste collection, road sweeping, and public space cleanliness. The ceremony was attended by notable figures such as Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao and Bilha Nagar Panchayat officials.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao praised Bilha’s achievement, highlighting its significance for Chhattisgarh and its ability to motivate other urban areas. PM Modi’s recognition in ‘Mann Ki Baat’ has significantly elevated the national profile of Bilha’s success.
