Bihar is set to modernize its road infrastructure with a digital initiative by the Urban Development and Housing Department. This project aims to create a systematic record of roads in urban areas. Municipal bodies across the state are required to submit detailed road mapping reports by August 20, 2025. The project introduces a color-coded system, with each color representing a different constructing agency, to aid in easy road identification and urban development planning. National highways will be marked in red, state highways in green, roads built by the Rural Works Department in black, roads managed by municipal bodies in yellow, roads by the District Council in blue-pink, roads by the Local Area Engineering Organization in blue, and roads under other departments in purple. This color-based classification will enhance the transparency and efficiency of road network management. The municipal bodies are expected to provide comprehensive details, including road length, width, construction dates, and current condition, using a standardized format. This digital database will support maintenance efforts and inform future urban projects. The department has issued directives to its Chief Engineers and Superintending Engineers for immediate action. This initiative is concurrent with the ‘Chief Minister Electricity Consumer Assistance Scheme’, where Chief Minister Nitish Kumar digitally engaged with over 1.6 million beneficiaries. This scheme provides 125 units of free electricity to approximately 18.9 million households, resulting in monthly savings of ₹700 for urban households and ₹500 for rural households. The Urban Development Department’s order marks a groundbreaking step in organizing Bihar’s urban road infrastructure. The color-coded mapping and digital records will significantly enhance road management, maintenance operations, and project planning, driving Bihar towards becoming a digital and advanced state.
