The Biju Janata Dal’s youth and student leadership has escalated pressure on the state government, demanding a CBI investigation into the alleged corrupt practices within the police sub-inspector recruitment examination. Accusations of a ‘cash for job’ scam have surfaced, leading to widespread discontent among the state’s young job seekers. The BJD’s youth wing president, Chinmaya Sahu, asserted that the current investigation by the Crime Branch is a deliberate move to conceal the involvement of high-profile individuals. He further challenged the legality of the Odisha Police Recruitment Board (OPRB) contracting private agencies for the recruitment process, suggesting a ‘government job auction’ scheme. In response, the party announced plans for a statewide demonstration. Ipsita Sahoo, head of the BJD’s student wing, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the profound disappointment of thousands of aspirants. She introduced the ‘Yuva-Chhatra Nyaya Andolan’ as a movement to secure justice for those affected. The Combined Police Service Examination, which aimed to recruit 933 sub-inspectors, was postponed after police in Berhampur arrested 117 people, including candidates and alleged brokers. These individuals reportedly paid bribes to secure jobs. The Crime Branch has since arrested two additional brokers. Over 1.53 lakh candidates applied for the positions. The Chief Minister has pledged to hold all responsible parties accountable, irrespective of their influence, but the BJD remains committed to its demand for a CBI-led inquiry to ensure a truly impartial investigation.
