RBI receives green light to print two billion polymer banknotes

The Reserve Bank of India has been given formal approval by the central government to manufacture two billion polymer currency notes for field testing. A tender has already been floated to source the specialised polymer substrate and printing equipment required for the project. The RBI says the polymer material promises higher resistance to wear, water and soil, potentially extending the life of each note compared with traditional paper. The bank will monitor performance metrics throughout the trial before recommending any policy changes.
