A murder in Phulwari Sharif, Patna, has exposed a disturbing case of domestic violence and murder. A young man was killed inside his home, and his sister-in-law has confessed to the crime. She admitted that she carried out the act under duress from her husband, who had also arranged for her to be trained to use firearms.
The incident took place in Bhusaula Danapur, where Rizwan Qureshi was murdered on Sunday morning. Police quickly arrested three individuals: Rizwan’s elder brother, Shahbaz Qureshi; his wife, Shabnam; and Syed Raza, who provided the weapon. A country-made pistol, several live cartridges, and an empty cartridge were recovered from the suspects.
The investigation indicated that Rizwan was involved in an illicit relationship with his sister-in-law, which continued after her marriage. This led to growing family discord, with Shahbaz, the elder brother, becoming increasingly incensed. After multiple failed attempts to resolve the issue, Shahbaz orchestrated a plot.
City SP Paschimi Bhanu Pratap Singh stated that Shahbaz pressured his wife to kill Rizwan, threatening her with divorce if she refused. Shabnam, fearing her husband’s threats, agreed to participate in the murder.
As planned, Shabnam added sleeping pills to the family’s tea, ensuring everyone was asleep. She then shot Rizwan while he was sleeping, resulting in his immediate death. In an attempt to mislead the investigation, she locked her husband in a room after the murder and attempted to escape Patna Junction.
To execute the plan, Shahbaz procured a pistol and ammunition from Syed Raza. He took his wife to Khagaul Canal and trained her to shoot. She also learned how to use firearms from YouTube videos and underwent a month of training.
During interrogation, the accused woman confessed to the crime. She stated that she had killed her brother-in-law because of pressure and fear of her husband. An FIR was registered at the Phulwari Sharif police station based on the statement of the deceased’s wife, Yasmin Khatoon. A special team was formed under the leadership of City SP Bhanu Pratap Singh and SDPO-1 Sushil Kumar.
