Modi Government’s PUCC Extension Aims to Lighten Burden on BS‑VI Owners

The current system requires a yearly PUCC renewal for all private cars, regardless of their emission class. Under the new proposal, BS‑VI vehicles that are up to six years old would only need to visit a testing centre once every three years. Authorities argue that because BS‑VI engines emit far less carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and particulates, a reduced testing cadence will not compromise air quality. Vehicle owners could save time and paperwork, while the enforcement agencies concentrate resources on older BS‑IV, BS‑III and earlier models that still pollute heavily.
