A bride from Bihar caused a sensation in Jodhpur after a dramatic escape attempt that exposed a marriage fraud. Following the wedding, she locked her groom in a room and, in a desperate attempt to flee, jumped from the balcony, resulting in severe injuries and a police investigation.
The incident took place under the purview of the Banar police station. Bharat, the groom, filed a report detailing the fraudulent marriage. He accused 23-year-old Suman and five others of being involved in the scheme.
Bharat explained in his report that he was seeking a suitable match. Nandkishore Soni, an acquaintance of his father, suggested a marriage on June 27 with a woman from Bihar. Two associates, Sandeep Sharma and Ravi, presented two women: Suman and Ruby Pandey. Bharat chose Suman, and was told he needed to pay 300,000 rupees for the wedding.
Bharat paid 170,000 rupees in cash and transferred 130,000 rupees online. The marriage was solemnized at an Arya Samaj temple. Two days later, he discovered that Suman was a ‘looteri dulhan’. A dispute arose, and Suman locked him in the room. She then fashioned a rope from her saree and jumped from the balcony, fracturing both legs. Ravi and Sandeep were waiting to assist her, but fled after Bharat’s family intervened, leaving Suman to be caught.
Despite her injuries and arrest, Suman continued to mislead authorities by altering her father’s name while in the hospital. Further investigation revealed she was already married and had provided false documents during the wedding, leading to the unraveling of the entire gang. Suman Pandey hails from Aurangabad, Bihar; Sandeep Sharma from Kaushambi, UP; Ravi and Ruby Devi from Dalmia Nagar, Rohtas, Bihar; and Nand Kishore Soni and Jitendra Soni from Jodhpur. The search for the remaining suspects is underway.
