In Munger, Bihar, a sergeant has been arrested for allegedly extorting money from constables under the guise of medical evaluations. The sergeant is accused of collecting 2,500 rupees from each of 60 constables. The Superintendent of Police (SP) took action following a complaint. 36,000 rupees in cash was recovered from the arrested sergeant.
The incident involves the illegal extraction of 2,500 rupees per constable from newly appointed constables in Munger district under the guise of ensuring their medical fitness. The SP immediately suspended Sergeant Sumit Kumar from his post at the Police Line. SP Syed Imran Masood reported that 36,000 rupees, gained through illegal means from the constables, was also recovered from Sergeant Sumit Kumar.
Sergeant Sumit Kumar was arrested after an FIR was lodged at the Purabsarai police station, and he was subsequently placed in judicial custody. The SP stated that a complaint regarding the illicit demands made to the newly recruited constables arriving to join the district force was received on June 11. The Deputy Superintendent of Police was tasked with investigating the matter and submitting a report.
The investigation substantiated that extortion was taking place under the pretense of medical fitness evaluations. Sergeant Sumit Kumar, stationed at the Police Line, was found to be extorting money from the newly appointed constables. The SP indicated that 334 new constables had come to join the Munger district force. The sergeant demanded 2,500 rupees per constable from 60 constables, claiming they would fail their medical evaluations unless they paid. This group comprised 40 female and 20 male constables.
It was revealed that 60 constables had already paid the sergeant. The investigation team recovered 36,000 rupees in cash from Sergeant Sumit Kumar, which had been collected from the constable candidates. The SP announced the immediate suspension and arrest of Sergeant Sumit Kumar, followed by his imprisonment after an FIR was filed.
