Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a special commemorative coin of Rs 100 to mark the centenary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The coin, released on October 1st, features ‘Bharat Mata’ on Indian currency for the first time. The coin shows RSS volunteers in the Sangh uniform paying respects to Bharat Mata. Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the event as a proud and historic occasion. The coin also bears the RSS’s foundational mantra: ‘Rashtriya Swaha, Idan Rashtraya, Idan Mama,’ signifying complete dedication to the nation. A postage stamp illustrating RSS volunteers’ participation in the 1963 Republic Day parade was also released. Despite the celebration, the event faced harsh criticism. Opposition parties accused the government of glorifying the RSS. The Congress voiced concerns that the RSS played no part in the freedom struggle. The CPI (Marxist) condemned the coin and stamp as an insult to the Constitution, claiming the RSS uses ‘Bharat Mata’ to promote Hindutva. The CPI (M) also disputed the claim that the RSS was involved in the 1963 parade. Party leader MA Baby accused the PM of supporting the RSS’s communal agenda and distorting historical facts. Jairam Ramesh, a Congress leader, cited a 1948 letter from Sardar Patel which linked the RSS to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. In response, Prime Minister Modi stated that the RSS consistently prioritizes the nation and has shown resilience despite facing adversity. Modi also asserted that the RSS has always supported freedom fighters. The RSS was founded in 1925 by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar in Nagpur with a mission to foster cultural awareness, discipline, and a spirit of service.
