The coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh are facing a significant threat as Cyclone Montha intensifies over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red alert,’ signaling a high degree of danger for several districts. The cyclone is expected to cross the coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, close to Kakinada, on the evening or night of October 28th.
Current data indicates Montha is packing sustained winds of 90–100 kmph, with possible gusts of up to 110 kmph. Forecasters predict heavy to very heavy rainfall across coastal Andhra, with the possibility of extremely heavy downpours in certain locations. The storm’s development is supported by intense convection and thunderstorms observed in the Bay of Bengal.
Government agencies are activating emergency response protocols. Officials in Kakinada, Konaseema, West Godavari, Krishna, Bapatla, Prakasam, and Nellore have been instructed to remain vigilant. Preparations include distributing food supplies and ensuring the availability of medicines and relief materials in vulnerable communities. Measures to evacuate residents from low-lying areas and establish safe shelters are underway. The IMD urges all residents to stay updated with official advisories and to follow safety guidelines. Fishermen are prohibited from going out to sea for the next five days.
