A concerning number of residents in Bavdhan Budruk have fallen ill due to a water-borne disease outbreak, with the total count reaching 94 by Thursday. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials noted an additional 51 cases, underscoring the widespread impact. The initial reports on Tuesday had identified over 43 patients, predominantly from Gunde Vasti, Patil Nagar, Jadhav Vasti, and the Gaothan area, who were suffering from symptoms like vomiting, loose motions, and diarrhea.
In response, the PMC health department launched intensive surveillance from Tuesday. This proactive measure, combining hospital data and door-to-door checks, identified 20 new cases at the PMC hospital’s outpatient department and 31 during field investigations between October 8th and 9th.
Analysis of the 94 cases shows a significant impact on the adult population. The 16 to 45-year-old age group saw the highest incidence with 55 cases. The 46 to 60 age bracket recorded 20 cases, while nine individuals over 60 years old were also affected. Additionally, seven children between 6 and 15 years and three children under five years old contracted the illness.
Dr. Nina Borade, PMC’s Health Chief, provided reassurance, stating that most affected individuals are mildly symptomatic and are receiving treatment as outpatients. She clarified that the 94 reported cases primarily developed symptoms three to four days prior, indicating that the period of fresh symptom development has largely passed.
To ensure public safety and confirm the issue is resolved, the PMC is diligently collecting water samples from the impacted areas. Twenty-seven samples have been dispatched to laboratories for comprehensive analysis over the last three days. City officials confirm that the water supply has been restored to safe standards, and the coordinated efforts have brought the situation under control.
