The Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has arrested 16 individuals for illegal cattle slaughter during Eid-ul-Adha. Cattle parts were recovered from various locations throughout the state, and five illegal slaughtering sites were discovered in the Barak Valley. Sarma reiterated the government’s dedication to maintaining communal harmony while upholding the law. The Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, regulates cattle slaughter in specific areas. Protests and clashes took place in Hojai, involving road blockades and confrontations with law enforcement. Authorities are probing reports of meat being thrown at locations, including near Cotton University and a temple in Dhubri.
