As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to turn 75, the BJP’s trajectory reveals a story of remarkable expansion. Since Modi took office, the BJP has risen from a party with a minimal presence to a dominant force in Indian politics. Today, the BJP governs in 20 states and two union territories. The BJP governs alone in 12 states and one union territory. In 2014, when Narendra Modi became Prime Minister, the BJP’s presence was restricted to only a handful of states. The NDA, led by the BJP, has seen its influence grow steadily over the years. The BJP has expanded its footprint significantly. The BJP’s single-party governments are in control in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Odisha, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and Delhi. The NDA also forms governments in Maharashtra, Goa, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, Assam, and Puducherry. Several states have seen the BJP and NDA form governments for the first time during this period, including Haryana, Maharashtra, Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, and Odisha. The states where the BJP and the NDA are not in power include Telangana, Punjab, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mizoram, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, and Jammu-Kashmir. The next elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala are scheduled for 2026, with Punjab and Telangana holding elections in 2027 and 2028, respectively.
