A devastating Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad resulted in the deaths of 241 people, including passengers and crew members. The London-bound flight, AI-171, with 230 passengers and 12 crew members, took off at 1:17 PM but crashed shortly after into the BJ Medical College and Hospital. Out of the 242 people on board, only one person survived: Ramesh Vishwas Kumar. He, along with others injured, including MBBS students, is currently receiving medical treatment at Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad.
Ramesh Vishwas Kumar, a British citizen from Daman and Diu, is the sole survivor of the AI-171 plane crash. He is under care in a separate, highly restricted room in Ward C7 of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital to ensure privacy and security. He sustained injuries to his chest, eyes, and feet. He recalled that the plane crashed approximately 30 seconds after takeoff due to a loud noise.
He had visited India to see his family and was traveling back to the UK with his brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh, when the tragedy occurred. He has been living in London with his family for the past 20 years.
Ramesh shared that he woke up to a scene of devastation, surrounded by bodies. He managed to run from the wreckage and was assisted into an ambulance. A team from the Gujarat Police Crime Branch is interrogating him, and the Deputy Collector of Daman and Diu met with him. Officials from the British Consulate also visited, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Ramesh Vishwas Kumar on Friday.
