A monumental eight-hour cleanliness drive undertaken by the Bengaluru North City Corporation (BNCC) has culminated in the collection of over 599 tonnes of waste, with Sarvagnanagar Assembly Constituency emerging as the champion. This top-performing zone has been awarded a ₹1 lakh prize for its remarkable efforts in making Bengaluru cleaner.
The initiative, orchestrated by BNCC Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar, covered an extensive 95 km stretch of roads across seven city divisions: Hebbal, Pulikeshinagar, Sarvagnanagar, Yelahanka, Byatarayanapura, Dasarahalli, and Rajarajeshwari Nagar.
Awards were instituted to motivate officials and recognize the most effective cleaning operations. The evaluation involved detailed inspections and a transparent assessment process. Each constituency’s performance was judged on the quality and impact of its cleaning, with input from Chief Engineers, RWAs, and community stakeholders.
The scope of the drive was broad, including the clearance of construction debris, silt, and overgrown vegetation, as well as the thorough cleaning of roads, footpaths, medians, parks, and drainage systems.
Over 4,200 pourakarmikas and volunteers contributed to this significant cleanup. The total waste collected included 275 tons of construction debris, 210 tons of dry waste, 86 tons from vacant plots, and 28 tons of household items cleared from footpaths.
Sarvagnanagar proudly received the ₹1,00,000 first prize. Byatarayanapura was recognized with the ₹50,000 second prize, and Yelahanka secured the ₹25,000 third prize. Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar emphasized the drive’s success in achieving both a cleaner urban environment and heightened public awareness about maintaining city hygiene.
