250 Life‑Saving Organs Harvested at Gujarat’s Leading Public Donation Centre

The civil hospital in Ahmedabad, a flagship public organ donation centre in Gujarat, has crossed the landmark of 250 cadaveric organ donations. The latest procurement came from a 58‑year‑old West Bengal resident who was declared brain‑dead after a serious fall at home.

After two days in the intensive care unit, the patient, identified as Prasun Bhaumik, was medically declared brain‑dead on July 26. His wife, Kshama, after consulting with the hospital’s donation team headed by Dr. Mohit Champawat, consented to the donation despite the family's sorrow.

The retrieved organs – a liver and two kidneys – have been transplanted into three critically ill patients at the Institute of Kidney Disease and Research Centre (IKDRC) located within the Civil Medcity complex. These transplants are expected to significantly improve the recipients’ quality of life and survival chances.

State Health Minister Prabhul Pansheriya praised the accomplishment, calling it a testament to Gujarat’s dedication to organ donation. He reiterated the government's message that "donation of organs is the greatest gift" and thanked the families who chose to give life even in their darkest moments. Hospital superintendent Dr. Rakesh Joshi added that the figure of 250 donations showcases rising public trust and the selfless spirit of medical professionals.

Since its inception, the hospital has retrieved 827 organs from 250 deceased donors, comprising 224 livers, 462 kidneys, 21 pancreases, 78 hearts, 34 lungs, six hands and two small intestines.
