Millions of Jan Dhan account holders will get insurance protection, 6 years of the scheme completed

Jan Dhan Yojana: Six years of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) completed. On the occasion of its sixth anniversary, it was announced that the government will provide insurance cover to Jan Dhan account holders. Under this, they will be brought under the ambit of Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY). Under this scheme, bank accounts of more than 40 crore people of the country have been opened. 34.81 crore of these accounts were active this month.

The Finance Ministry said in a statement that the eligible account holders from Jan Dhan Yojana will be provided with the facility of Jeevan Jyoti Insurance Scheme and Suraksha Bima Yojana. Under the Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, bank account holders in the age group of 18-50 years are provided life insurance cover up to two lakh rupees for a year at a premium of just Rs 330.

People can reach the poor only through Jan Dhan accounts: Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the scheme became the strong foundation of the Modi Government’s people-centric economy. He said that all the work such as providing financial help to the poor in the difficult times of Corona, paying workers’ wages under MNREGA, providing immediate financial help to the farmers under PM-Kisan Yojana could be successful only through Jan Dhan accounts.

What is Jan Dhan Yojana:

The scheme was launched in 2014 by the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the beginning of its first term. Its objective is to bring every Indian who does not have a bank account into the mainstream of banking services. There is a fixed upper limit for deposits. Its account holders get many facilities free of cost. Of the more than 40 crore Jan Dhan accounts opened so far, more than 63 per cent account holders are from rural areas. About 55 percent of them are women.
