Iconic Film ‘Umrao Jaan’ Featured in Rekha’s IFFM Tribute
The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne will present a special screening of the 1981 masterpiece "Umrao Jaan" as part of the tribute to actress Rekha. The film, celebrated for its lyrical storytelling and powerful performances, will be shown on a tribute night dedicated to the legend.
Organisers highlighted that the screening also serves as a homage to the late playback singer Asha Bhosle, whose voice defined the movie's musical landscape. Rekha remarked that the role of Umrao remains alive in her silence and memories, and that revisiting the journey on a global stage is profoundly moving.
Festival director Meetu Bhowmik Langue emphasized that Rekha’s influence stretches across generations of actors, filmmakers, and audiences. The screening is expected to draw cinephiles, diaspora members, and Australian cultural figures who share a love for Indian cinematic heritage.
