Producer Boney Kapoor has shared an interesting anecdote from the initial phase of his professional and personal journey with his late wife, the immensely talented Sridevi. A recently circulating video clip captures Kapoor recounting how he managed Sridevi’s acting fees, a crucial step in their enduring partnership.
Kapoor explained that when Sridevi’s mother quoted a fee of INR 10 lakhs, he decided to offer INR 11 lakhs instead. This occurred during the casting for ‘Joshilaay,’ a film that aimed to pair Sridevi with Sunny Deol. Kapoor’s strategic vision included securing a top actress for his brother’s role, making Sridevi a natural fit.
He described his first encounter with Sridevi in Mumbai, where she guided him to her mother for fee negotiations. Later, he met her mother in Chennai. Despite their communication hurdles, Kapoor adeptly interpreted her gestures. He understood her mention of ’10 rupees’ to signify INR 10 lakhs. Having researched her previous contract of INR 8.5 lakhs, Kapoor initially considered a modest increase. However, he ultimately proposed INR 11 lakhs, a figure that caused her mother to pause. He also agreed to a significantly higher sum for staff allowances.
Kapoor further elaborated on his involvement with ‘Chandni,’ where he facilitated Sridevi’s signing for INR 15 lakhs. He maintained this approach in subsequent negotiations, often offering more than requested and setting future financial terms. For the grand production of ‘Khuda Gawah,’ Sridevi’s remuneration was reportedly INR 25 lakhs, a testament to her status.
Sridevi’s enduring impact on Indian cinema is celebrated globally. Her untimely demise in Dubai on February 24, 2018, at the age of 54, was a deeply felt loss. The official cause of death was reported as accidental drowning, with cardiac arrest contributing to the tragedy.
