Jaya Bachchan has once again voiced her strong disapproval of the contemporary paparazzi culture, describing it as ‘strange’ and unprofessional at the We The Women Asia event in Mumbai. The veteran actress articulated a clear distinction between the established media, which she holds in high regard, and the paparazzi, with whom she claims to have a ‘zero’ relationship.
Bachchan explained her profound respect for journalism, acknowledging her own upbringing and career’s deep ties to the media. ‘My relationship with the media is fantastic. I’m the product of the media,’ she affirmed. Conversely, she expressed her disdain for paparazzi, questioning their credentials and motivations. ‘Who are these people? Are they trained to represent the people of this country?’ she challenged, emphasizing her father’s journalistic legacy.
She criticized the sense of entitlement displayed by many paparazzi, particularly those who she feels are overly empowered by possessing mobile phones. Bachchan vividly described their appearance and intrusive behavior. ‘Magar ye jo bahar drain-pipe tight gande gande pant pahen ke haath mein mobile leke… they think they have a mobile in their hand so they can take your picture?’ she articulated, expressing her frustration with their constant presence and actions.
The actress also decried the inappropriate comments and loud remarks often made by paparazzi, raising questions about their educational background and where they come from. She doubted their suitability to represent the public, especially given their reliance on social media platforms. Bachchan remains unbothered by online criticism, stating, ‘I don’t give a damn,’ and likening aggressive paparazzi to ‘chuha (rat)’ invading personal space.
Bachchan further took aim at young actors, accusing some of them of intentionally alerting paparazzi to their movements for publicity. She labeled this practice ’embarrassing’ and questioned the authenticity of celebrities who rely on such staged encounters, asking, ‘Agar aapko apna photo nikalne ke liye airport pe camera bulana pade, to phir kya tarah ka celebrity ho aap?’
Her most recent film, ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,’ a highly successful Karan Johar directorial, was honored with a National Award after its 2023 release.
