In a powerful defense against public criticism, Upasana Kamineni Konidela, entrepreneur and wife of Telugu film star Ram Charan, has firmly declared her decision to freeze her eggs as a fundamental right, not a matter of privilege. Her vocal stance has amplified the discussion on women’s control over their reproductive timelines and career pursuits.
Upasana took to X (formerly Twitter) to thank those who engaged respectfully in the ensuing debate, signaling her intent to further articulate her views on privilege and its societal implications. She also urged her followers to consider the facts she presented, which aimed to foster informed discussions. Through a series of rhetorical questions, she challenged the societal pressures that dictate women’s choices regarding marriage, motherhood timing, and career prioritization.
Providing a personal account, Upasana shared that she married at 27 and opted to freeze her eggs at 29, citing personal and health considerations, and encouraging other women to explore this path. She highlighted that she had her first child at 36 and is now pregnant with twins at 39, stressing the importance she places on building a career alongside nurturing her marriage and family. Upasana stated unequivocally, “I decide the timeline! That’s not privilege; it’s my right!!!”
This declaration builds on her previous advocacy for egg freezing, which she has described as essential ‘insurance’ for women seeking to align their personal lives with their professional goals and financial independence. Ram Charan and Upasana have been married since 2012. They welcomed their daughter in 2023 and are reportedly expecting twins soon.
