Traders Brace for Volatility Ahead of Sensex Weekly Expiry

Thursday marks the weekly derivatives expiry for the Sensex on the BSE, and the market is preparing for a possible surge in volatility. The recently launched Closing Auction System (CAS) collects orders in a predetermined window and determines a single equilibrium price that matches the maximum number of orders.

Because BSE’s cash market usually sees lower participation than its rival NSE, a sizeable order during the auction can have a disproportionate impact on the final settlement price of the Sensex. This risk was highlighted after Tuesday’s Nifty expiry, when the benchmark index jumped more than 150 points during the closing auction, sending shockwaves through the futures and options market.

Several market experts point out that the implied volatility of Sensex call options has climbed sharply in the run‑up to the expiry, indicating that traders are pricing in a higher chance of large price movements in the final moments of the trading session.

On the flip side, some insiders suggest that the worries may be overstated. They argue that after the turbulence observed in the Nifty expiry, many participants are likely to trim their exposure rather than take aggressive positions ahead of the Sensex expiry.

Overall, the consensus is that any extra wobble caused by the new auction framework will fade as market participants grow familiar with the process and as liquidity improves over time.
