The Indian automotive sector is poised for a transformation as hybrid technology gains prominence, with a number of SUVs and cars expected to embrace the shift by 2026-27. Maruti Suzuki is set to introduce its in-house developed, affordable strong hybrid powertrain in the Fronx compact crossover and the next-generation Baleno hatchback in 2026. Mahindra’s XUV 3XO will also be adopting hybrid technology next year. In the mid-size SUV segment, the Honda Elevate hybrid is expected to arrive in 2026, followed by new-generation Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos models in 2027. The returning Renault Duster SUV will offer multiple powertrain options, including hybrid, petrol, and CNG.
Mahindra’s NU_IQ platform is designed for hybrid powertrains. The vehicle manufacturer recently presented its new NU_IQ platform, which is compatible with a variety of powertrains, including hybrid systems. This means future Mahindra SUVs built on the NU-IQ architecture can be offered with hybrid power. The XUV 3XO, which will be released in 2026, will be Mahindra’s first hybrid vehicle. It is expected to have a 1.2-liter turbo petrol engine combined with a hybrid system.
Honda will soon begin production of its first hybrid SUV. Production of Honda’s first hybrid SUV will soon begin at the company’s Tapukara plant in Alwar, Rajasthan. The market launch is anticipated in the second half of 2026. Honda could use the City e:HEV’s Atkinson cycle 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder petrol hybrid powertrain for the Honda Elevate hybrid.
The 2025 Maruti Fronx will see the debut of a new in-house developed strong hybrid powertrain, built around a 1.2-liter Z-series petrol engine. The same powertrain will be used in the next-generation Baleno, set to be released in 2026.
The third-generation Renault Duster will be available for sale with a petrol engine in early 2026. Its hybrid variant is expected to be available 6 to 12 months later. Popular mid-size SUVs in India, the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, will feature hybrid upgrades in 2027. Both SUVs are anticipated to utilize a hybridized 1.5L, 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a strong hybrid system.
