Tata Motors has confirmed that it has not been affected by the recent export restrictions on rare earth metals, currently maintaining a stable supply chain. The company has built strategic inventories. As a leading electric vehicle manufacturer in India, Tata Motors is actively pursuing alternative sources for rare earth metals to ensure future resilience. This move comes in response to China’s control over a large segment of the global rare earth market, especially in processing essential materials utilized in EV motors. Consequently, manufacturers worldwide are reassessing their supply strategies. Tata Motors is developing alternative supply chains and building strategic inventories. The company has plans to split its commercial and passenger vehicle businesses into separate listed entities by the end of 2025, accelerating its focus on EV and green mobility. Tata aims to reach a 30% EV penetration rate in its passenger vehicle segment by 2030. Additionally, the company is focusing on expanding its bus portfolio, in addition to the production of hydrogen powertrain trucks. The Indian government is also preparing production-based fiscal incentives to boost domestic manufacturing. The Ministry of Heavy Industries is currently drafting a plan, which is anticipated to include funding to cover the difference in costs between locally-produced magnets and imported ones. India, which already has substantial reserves of rare earth minerals, is working to enhance its capacity to supply these minerals globally. The National Critical Mineral Mission has been launched to promote self-reliance in this sector, with new projects focused on exploring neodymium, a rare earth metal widely used in the automotive industry.
