Skoda is set to broaden its presence in India by introducing more of its acclaimed global vehicle models, aiming to capture a wider customer segment. However, the Czech carmaker has put its immediate electric vehicle (EV) launch plans for India on hold. The company’s current vehicle offerings in the Indian market are priced from above Rs 7 lakh to exceeding Rs 40 lakh.
A senior company official indicated that the consistent range of locally manufactured vehicles will remain for the upcoming year. The strategic focus will shift towards introducing some of Skoda’s iconic international models to the Indian market to create buzz and excitement, following the successful reintroduction of the Octavia. Skoda’s current lineup in India includes the domestically produced Kylaq, Kushaq, and Slavia, in addition to imported vehicles like the Octavia and Kodiaq.
Skoda India is enjoying its most successful year in terms of sales, with 61,607 units sold between January and October. This performance surpasses the previous annual record. The company is committed to holding onto its 2% market share in the Indian passenger car segment. The strong sales momentum generated during the festive season is expected to carry forward into the remaining months of the year.
In terms of product development, Skoda is looking to expand the Kylaq variants and provide updates for its Kushaq and Slavia models. Regarding its electrification strategy, Skoda cited numerous market uncertainties in India, including evolving EV policies and trade discussions, as reasons for the delay in launching EVs. Despite having a comprehensive global EV portfolio, the company finds it challenging to commit to a firm launch timeline for India at this moment. Skoda reiterated its commitment to electric mobility as the future and confirmed that it is actively preparing for an EV future in India, even if the timing is not immediate.
