Mahindra & Mahindra is emerging as a strong competitor to Maruti Suzuki in India’s booming utility vehicle sector. The gap in sales between the two automotive giants has significantly diminished, signaling a potential change in market dynamics. The sales difference, which was substantial at 53,500 units during the initial four months of fiscal year 2025 (April-July), has sharply reduced to just 12,700 units in the current year’s corresponding period. The most recent monthly figures for July show the gap at only 2,900 units.
Should this trend hold, Mahindra & Mahindra is positioned to reclaim its top position after a nine-year period. To manage the rising customer demand, Mahindra is increasing production capabilities. Maruti Suzuki has relied on models such as the Vitara Brezza and Ertiga to maintain its top position in the UV segment since fiscal year 2018.
