The government is implementing a policy change that significantly increases the re-registration fees for two- and four-wheelers that are 20 years old or older. This decision is part of a broader strategy to reduce pollution by encouraging the replacement of older vehicles with newer models. The updated fees will make it more expensive to keep older vehicles on the road, providing an incentive for owners to upgrade. Vehicles aged between 15 and 20 years are not affected by these changes, but the emphasis is on vehicles manufactured before 2005 which do not meet BSII emission norms.
The new fee structure reflects a substantial increase across the board. The re-registration fee for made-in-India cars has increased from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000. Similarly, the fee for made-in-India bikes and scooters has risen from ₹1,000 to ₹2,000. The impact is particularly severe for imported vehicles. The cost of re-registering a 20-year-old imported car has increased from ₹40,000 to ₹80,000, and the fee for imported two-wheelers will now range from ₹10,000 to ₹20,000. In addition, three-wheelers and other commercial vehicles will also see increased fees, from ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 and from ₹6,000 to ₹12,000 respectively.
