In a remarkable display of skill and longevity, Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma has ascended to the top of the charts as the highest wicket-taker in Women’s T20 International cricket. This crowning achievement occurred during the final match of the series against Sri Lanka at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.
Sharma, a consistent performer for India, has now edged past Australia’s Megan Schutt to claim the record for most wickets in this fast-paced format. Prior to Tuesday’s game, both bowlers were locked at 151 wickets. The record-breaking moment arrived for Sharma in the 14th over of Sri Lanka’s run chase.
She managed to trap Nilakshika Silva in front after the batter attempted a boundary-hitting shot, securing her 152nd T20I wicket. This dismissal not only put her ahead of Schutt but also cemented her legacy as a formidable force in women’s T20 cricket. Sharma achieved this milestone in her 130th T20I innings. Her all-round contributions were further recognized when she achieved the rare double of 1,000 runs and 150 wickets in T20 Internationals earlier in the series, a feat unmatched by any other Indian cricketer in this format. Her invaluable presence in the team, contributing with both bat and ball, is undeniable. Additionally, Sharma was honored with the Player of the Tournament award in the Women’s ODI World Cup earlier this year, underscoring her sustained excellence.
