Top-order batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad is poised to make a return to India’s One Day International (ODI) squad for the series against South Africa, with captain KL Rahul strongly suggesting an imminent opportunity. Gaikwad’s recall comes after a period of sustained success in the 50-over format for India A, notably against South Africa A. He last represented India in ODIs almost two years ago.
Rahul highlighted Gaikwad’s quality during a press conference ahead of the series. “Ruturaj Gaikwad is, obviously, a top-class player; we have all seen it with whatever opportunities, limited opportunities he has got, he’s really utilised it and shown what he can do,” Rahul remarked. He also spoke about the challenge of finding a place in India’s well-established ODI top order. “Unfortunately, in ODI cricket, the top six or the top five is quite settled and they are performing really well. So you feel bad for players not getting enough opportunities,” he said.
With injuries to key batsmen Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, Gaikwad, along with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant, has a prime chance to showcase his talent. “He will get his opportunity at some stage, and yeah, looking forward to giving him that chance and letting him show what he can do and do the job for the team,” Rahul confirmed, indicating potential rotation in the squad as there is no immediate ICC ODI tournament on the horizon. While the specific playing XI for the Ranchi ODI remains undisclosed, Rahul confirmed he will be batting at number six throughout the series.
