Suparn Verma, the director behind the critically lauded courtroom drama Haq, has revealed the tight circle of individuals who understand the true meaning of the film’s talked-about climax. The iconic final scene, featuring a solitary rose, is intentionally ambiguous, and Verma confirmed that only three people possess his definitive interpretation. During a recent discussion, Verma shared that the concept for the film’s ending was present from the initial stages of development. The exclusive group privy to this secret includes Emraan Hashmi, who plays the character of Abbas, Yami Gautam, portraying Shazia, and Rishika, the production designer. Verma elaborated on the creative synergy with Rishika, explaining that he requested a rose garden for the concluding sequence, and she provided an element that perfectly encapsulated the scene’s essence. The director meticulously integrated the rose’s symbolism throughout the narrative. He described how Emraan’s character gives Yami a rose early on, which is preserved by her and later reappears in Emraan’s pocket, playing a pivotal role in the film’s resolution. Verma intentionally abstains from imposing his own meaning, preferring to encourage a vibrant exchange of ideas and acknowledging the validity of all audience interpretations. The director also addressed the casting process for Abbas Khan. Verma acknowledged the challenge of finding an actor for the role, noting that while Emraan Hashmi was a consistent consideration, he initially saw it as a long shot. He credited a persistent belief and the successful arrangement of a meeting for securing Hashmi, whose performance is central to the film’s impact. Haq, which echoes the spirit of the Shah Bano case, is receiving widespread praise for its compelling performances and nuanced handling of complex themes.
