Skoda Auto is set to enrich its Indian offerings by introducing more of its acclaimed global models, a move designed to appeal to a broader spectrum of car buyers. While the company is celebrating a record sales year in India, its foray into the electric vehicle (EV) segment is being put on hold. Unpredictable market conditions are cited as the primary reason for delaying EV plans.
According to a senior official, Skoda will continue with its locally produced models like the Kushaq, Slavia, and Kodiaq, but the upcoming year will also feature the import of select iconic global vehicles to invigorate the market. This strategy aims to replicate the excitement generated by previous successful model introductions. Skoda’s current vehicle price range in India extends from Rs 7 lakh to upwards of Rs 40 lakh.
The company’s sales performance in India this year has been exceptional, marking its strongest period to date. Having already sold 61,607 units from January to October, Skoda has surpassed its previous annual sales record and is focused on maintaining its 2% market share in the domestic passenger car segment. The strong sales momentum is projected to continue beyond the current festive season.
Skoda is also focusing on product development within its existing lineup, with plans for expanded trims of the Kylaq and updates for the Kushaq and Slavia. On the subject of electric vehicles, while Skoda has a significant global EV portfolio, the company is adopting a wait-and-watch approach for India. Fluctuations in EV policies and trade discussions have made it difficult to establish a stable, long-term plan for electrification in the Indian market. Nevertheless, Skoda remains dedicated to eventually launching EVs in India.
